Overview & Founding Legacy:
The Independent Theatrical Employees of America (ITEA) Local 1 traces its foundational roots to the professional stagehands of Utica, New York, who originally operated as Local 128 under I.A.T.S.E. For decades, Local 128 served as the primary technical workforce for theatrical productions and live events across the Mohawk Valley region, establishing a strong reputation for craftsmanship and reliability.

Corporate History & Institutional Charter
Formation of ITEA Local 1
Following an overwhelming membership vote, the executive board resigned from the international parent body, and the vast majority of members signed representation cards to form a new, independent entity: ITEA Local 1.
Defending Local Jurisdiction
Evaluating that the merger would dilute local jurisdiction and compromise regional employment opportunities, the board and general membership sought full organizational autonomy.
The Catalyst for Change
During a period of internal governance challenges and shifting dispatch practices, the membership faced a mandatory organizational merger with I.A.T.S.E. Local 474 (Rome, NY).
